Microsoft is taking a jab at Apple today with the reinvention of the Surface.  This is the first Microsoft built PC in decades.  They are branding it as a full desktop PC in the form of a tablet.

The new Surface has a lot to offer to the tablet market.  There will be two main models, one with an Intel i5 processor and up to 128 GB of storage with a full USB 3.0 port, and an NVIDIA Tegra version with up to 64 GB of storage and a USB 2.0 port.  The ARM tablet weighs in at 1.5 pounds at a width of 9.3mm while the Intel comes in at a heftier weight of 1.9 pounds and 13.5mm thick.   Both come with a 10.6 inch ‘Full HD’ Gorilla Glass 2 display and a special liquid magnesium body called VaporMg.  Around the back you’ll find a kickstand that lays flush with the back of the device.  To finish things off they designed a completely new cooling system with a grate that runs along the frame of the machine.  Overall the Surface looks like a beautiful machine that has been designed to be the highest end device on the market.

The other big addition to the surface family is the array of covers that snap onto the frame of the device.  They attach very similarly to the iPad’s smart cover, but bring one really special feature.  They are also keyboards.  Microsoft is releasing two kinds of keyboard covers for the Surface.  The first is a super thin touch keyboard. There is no click, no depth for the press, but a touch sensitive area with keys printed on.  There is also a touchpad at the base of it.  The second cover is for people like me who needs some feedback from your keyboard.  Coming in a little thicker than the touch cover, the type cover has tactile keys.  Pricing and availability are unknown, but Steve Ballmer has said that they will be priced competitively with other ARM tablets and Intel Ultrabooks.  We’ll be reaching out to Microsoft for more information and a potential hands on for your viewing pleasure and we’ll let you know what we think.  I personally am ready to buy one now.  We’ll update this over time as we learn more.
